I've been reading up on securing my PC and am confused about one point: do I need hardware and software firewalls? I have one PC on which I'm the sole user and my Internet connection is a DSL modem ... what type of firewall should I have or do I need both?

I'm about to take delivery of a new Win7 laptop with a 500GB HD. I plan to repartition the disk to give 250GB to Linux, to run the machine dual-boot.
Although I've been around Linux for a while, it's been a long time since I last set up a machine like this. My plan is that the Linux part of the disk should itself have two partitions - one for /home and the other for everything else.
So, my question is, how much space for the 'everything else' partition? What I had in mind w.... read more

Hi, I have a private network on 10.0.2.x network on one hand (all linuxboxes running CentOS4.6) -- all of these hosts have a single LAN card, barring 1, called gatekeeper which has 2. On gatekeeper one of theinterfaces has the IP=10.0.2.254 (gateway for all other hosts on theprivate network), and the other interface is configured for DHCP.
Also, I've setup DynDNS on this machine s.t. I could reach thismachine over the Dynamic IP from anywhere. The interface with DHCP IP,allows it to connect t.... read more

Is it true that Microsoft is leaving us NT 4.0 Workstation users swinging in the wind by not providing a patch for the Baster worm? Patch 823803 was available yesterday but it crashes Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. Today that patch has been removed but there is no replacement. The newspaper says that Microsoft will not be supplying a patch for NT 4.0 because they no longer support it.

I am getting compiler warnings when using Vectors now, so I want to get rid of them by adding generics to my Vectors. Online it says to use the following syntax: Vector <Integer> v = new Vector(); I have a Vector as a member variable in one of my classes declared as: private Vector mNewStates; but when I add the generics to it like: private Vector <State> mNewStates; I get a compiler error, <identifier> expected. State is a class of mine which is being stored in the Vec.... read more

everything works fine, except tnsnames...
a can connect to remote database using: sqlplusxx/xx@(description=(address=(host=10.3.1.159)(protocol=tcp)(port=1521))(connect_data=(sid=DVLPBIS))) but I'm not able to use tnsnames.

I bought a used PC without an operating system about a year and a halfago. I bought Windows XP and loaded it on it. It has had a hardwarefailure and it would be too expensive to fix it.
My question is, if I throw that PC away can I take my Windows diskand load XP on another computer legally? Will Microsoft give me aproduct key for it or not? This other computer has Windows 2000 on it, but if I reformat it'shard drive I would think that I could load XP on it since it meets theWindows XP sys.... read more

Hi all, I run testing - I read email in icedove/thunderbird and browse the web with iceweasel/firefox. Lately (past few days) links have stopped working in icedove. Before, I'd click a web link and the page would come up in firefox. Now, nothing. I haven't changed any preferences recently.
Anyone else have this problem? How can I start to diagnose it? Thanks, Reid -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-user-REQUEST@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact listmaster.... read more
